After a triumphant performance at Global Fest-France, recent shows opposite legends Roy Ayers and Les McCann and performances at New York’s Lincoln Center, bandleader, author and music historian Aurora & Zon del Barrio returns to the United States to take audiences on a musical journey through Africa, Spain, the Caribbean and New York!
Under the musical direction of multi-instrumentalist arranger David Fernandez, Zon del Barrio is a high-energy musical extravaganza that travels through 100 Years of Latin Music, where passionate melodies, soulful harmonies and richly textured, inventive arrangements of Latin music classics and originals take you from the streets of Latin New York with salsa dura and boogaloo to the golden era of pre-Castro Cuba, the defection of the Dominican Republic’s merengue to the spicy Afro-Boricua rhythms of plena and bomba.
Featuring a 13-piece orchestra, amazing singers, dancers and special guest artists, Zon del Barrio sings in Spanish, English and an urban fusion known as “Spanglish” a dialect recognized by people of color everywhere. You’ll experience original riffs and rhythms rebooted through jazz modalities, innovative arrangements, and modern instrumentation emerging from one of the most original sounds to come out of New York in a long while.
Opening for hugely recognizable entities and artists such as the Grammy-Award winners Victor Manuelle, Gilberto Santa Rosa and Larry Harlow, chart-topping names like La India, Ismael Miranda, Andy Montanez, Brenda K. Star, Bernie Williams and Jose Feliciano, luminaries such as the Spanish Harlem Orchestra, the New York Knicks, the National Puerto Rican Day Parade, the late Fania All-Star Yomo Toro, Afro-Cuban legend “Chocolate” Armenteros, Grupo Mania, as well as their own recordings and the hit children’s show Dora the Explorer, history becomes music with Zon del Barrio!
